Vulva Art to Match Any Home’s Decor

7 min read

The Summer 2024 print issue of Croning is dedicated to Baubo, a figure from ancient Greek literature and religion. Like Sheela Na Gig, the star of the Spring issue of Croning, Baubo is known for displaying her vulva.

Baubo, Baubo, Baubo riding a pig

While doing some preliminary research for working with Baubo, I was served this ad, which I share because it made me laugh, and that is Baubo energy right there.

You will not be surprised to learn that the artists I have discovered—or rediscovered—don’t exactly make work that suits “any home’s decor.” Much of it is performance. Much of it is irreproducible. All of what I’m about to share is work that recognizes women’s bodies as a cultural battleground.

But before I continue…

I’m offering a discount on Substack subscriptions.

One of the prickliest parts of working as an independent artist is finding the right price for one’s work—and by “right” I mean a price that is accessible to as many people as possible without undervaluing the time, effort, and other resources that go into whatever you’re trying to sell.

When I launched Croning, the print zine, I thought about what I typically earn for freelance writing. When setting subscription prices for the Croning Substack, I looked at newsletters that seemed similar to mine.

I don’t think that these metrics were the right metrics for someone trying to build a new community of readers, and that’s why I just lowered prices for just about everything I have to offer.

A paid subscription to the Croning Substack is now more affordable at every level. A monthly subscription is $5. An annual subscription is $37. Becoming a Founding Hag at $97 gets you a free print copy of the zine, which is currently a quarterly publication. I’ve also adjusted the prices of zines and Tarot readings in the Postmodern Witch shop.
